The Alfred Moore Chapter,
National Society-Daughters of the American Revolution, held a special
rededication of a grave and wreath-laying ceremony on Saturday, May 5 to honor
the Honorable Alfred Moore at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson. Alfred Moore was
born on May 21, 1755, in New Hanover County, NC, and died on October 15, 1810,
at the age of 55 in Bladen County, NC. He is buried at Saint Philips Episcopal
Church Cemetery in Winnabow, Brunswick County, NC. His grave is nestled under a
large Oak Tree, situated next to the historic St. Phillips Episcopal Church. It
has been 55 years since the last grave dedication and wreath-laying ceremony
was held. The Alfred Moore Chapter is named after this Revolutionary hero.
Alfred Moore Chapter Regent,
Carolyn Loeser, and Brunswick Town Chapter Regent, Carol Jutte welcomed the
group. Guest speakers were Carole Nunalee Weiss, NCSDAR Regent Elect; Jane
Owens Barbot, Honorable State Regent, and past Vice President General (absent, but sent greetings), and
NCSDAR Historian, Robynn Rutledge.
After the Wreath-Laying Ceremony,
all members and honored guests came forward to pay their respects to Alfred
Moore. The Presentation of the Colors and the Retirement of the
Colors was done by Color Guard Commander, Gene Funderburk of the Lower Cape
Fear Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Benediction was given by
Harriet Riley, Vice Regent Elect.
Marcia Rowbottom,NC State Yearbook Chairman
and Alfred Moore Chapter Event Chairman, called upon Carole Weiss, NCSDAR Regent Elect and Carolyn Loeser, Regent, Alfred Moore Chapter to present the
21st Century Patriot Certificate to Janelle Preman, U.S. Army. A donation was presented to Brunswick Town Chapter member, Gwen
Causey for, Friends of Brunswick
Town/Fort Anderson, Inc. and to John Steward, President of the Lower Cape
Fear SAR NC George Washington Endowment Fund, and to John Thornhill, Historian
General of the National Society SAR, Inc.
After the special ceremony, attendees
enjoyed a Reception, hosted by the Brunswick Town Chapter, NS-DAR. Brunswick
Town/Fort Anderson State Park Site Manager, Jim McKee then led the group on a
tour of the grounds.
