Recently, Carol Jutte, Mary Sands and Martha Koletar participated in "Living Voices of the Past' at the Old Smithville Burying Ground in Southport, The event, sponsored by the Southport Historical Society, allowed visitors to "meet and bring to life" historical figures buried there by presenters telling their life stories. We told the story of Sempronius Russ, a Revolutionary Soldier who lived in Southport. Several years ago, our DAR Chapter donated a marker for his grave. Sempronius died on November 19, 1816. The gravestone was so badly deteriorated, that it was unreadable. The marker replicated exactly the words on the original gravestone. A wonderful day under absolutely breathtaking old Live Oak Trees honoring a man who made possible the freedoms we enjoy today!
