The Richard H. Stewart, Jr.
Post 543 of the American Legion and the Boy Scouts of America Troop 238 are
holding their 16th annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, July
3 at the BB&T bank flagpole located at the corner of Moore and Howe streets
in down- town Southport. Many of you have given flags to be retired. As
most of you know, the flag is burned in order to "retire" it, but did
you know the proper protocol and meaning of each step? This year's guest
speaker for the brief ceremony is First Sergeant Jim Carr. Sgt. Carr is a 21
year military veteran with service in Germany, Ethiopia, and Walter Reed Army
Medical Center. Submitted by Ann Newton, (910) 398-3986.
