Dear North Carolina VAVS Representatives, Deputy Representatives, and NCSDAR District Directors,
I have exciting news! After hearing a presentation last week from the Durham VAMC Women Veterans Program Director, Jamie Upchurch, all of us on that VAVS Board became aware of the great ongoing needs that VA Women Veteran maternity patients have, especially immediately following the births of their babies. Past State Regent Jane Barbot and I are asking for your help in collecting and bringing to NCSDAR State Conference items that these new mothers and their babies need:
All items need to be infant sizes and new in original packaging (unless they are hand knit/crocheted blankets)
Each chapter or individual is asked to bring 5-10 items. Receipts for the value of your gifts will be provided at the donation site.
Baby Blankets (crib and receiving sizes)
Sleepers/nightgowns/pajamas
Tee-shirts/onesies
Knit pants
Disposable Diapers (Luvs, Pampers, Huggies)
**Gift cards in any amount for Walmart and Target are greatly needed to purchase larger items like car seats, cribs, high chairs, crib linens, & mattresses. Gift cards are also easy to bring to State Conference.
Please no books or toys for this project. They are useful for other outreach efforts, but we are focusing on clothing and nursery needs.
Our State Regent, Mrs. Weiss, has given her approval to this new way to help our women veterans, so we are now ready to let the North Carolina Daughters know how they can help.
We are expecting a big response to the Baby Shower, so I am giving you this head's up before all the Chapter Regents get notified. Because you are all serving on the 4 VAVS Boards or are serving as District Directors, I hope that you will be willing to encourage that Chapters in your area donate to the Baby Shower.
The Baby Shower items we take in will be shared with all 4 VAMC Facilities in Asheville, Salisbury, Durham, and Fayetteville. Jamie Upchurch has assured us that these items will be greatly appreciated wherever they are given to veteran maternity patients.
Jane Barbot and I are working now to get a table set up from Thursday thru Saturday at State Conference in Raleigh as the collection point for donated baby gifts. I will need volunteers to help at the table by taking in and storing the donations and by giving receipts for each chapter and individual donation.
I hope that each of you will be willing to help with the collection process sometime during State Conference. I will be putting together a calendar to let you know when and how I need you to help in the collection area, probably between 9 am-5 pm each day Thursday-Saturday (April 25-27).
Chapters can begin accepting Baby Shower Donations now and at their February, March, and April Chapter meetings.
Thank you for your assistance and support!
In DAR Service,
Larry Young Hines
NCSDAR Service for Veterans State Chairman, 2018-21
