North Carolina General Recognized by NSDAR Nominated by Brunswick Town Chapter




                                 Brigadier General Clara Leach Adams-Ender

Brigadier General Clara Leach Adams-Ender of Willow Spring, North Carolina has been awarded NSDAR’s Women in American History Award. The nomination was forwarded to National by Brunswick Town NSDAR Chapter member Stacy Brown. General Adams-Ender was recognized by telephone at the organization’s Veterans luncheon. The award includes a medal and certificate which have been sent to her. Born in 1939, Adams-Ender joined the United States Army in order to attend nursing school. She was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps in 1961. In 1993, she retired as commanding officer of Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia. Her memoir, My Rise to the Stars: How a Sharecropper’s Daughter Became an Army General, was published in 2001.During her years of service, she was stationed at Fort Dix, South Korea, Fort Sam Houston, Fort George G. Meade, Germany and Fort Sheridan. She also accomplished many firsts including becoming the first woman to earn a degree in military arts and sciences from United States Army Command and General Staff College and the first African American to graduate from the United States Army War College. She also obtained a masters in medical-surgical nursing from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing.
