North Carolina DAR State Conference

Rhonda Amata, Ella Maugans, Jackie Craft, Gwen Causey, Nora Hickam, Betsy Pessetto and Regent Lisa Pomerance are the members of the  Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution from Southport, NC who attended the 2012 North Carolina DAR State Conference on April 2-4, 2012 in Raleigh, NC at the North Durham Hilton.

Brunswick Town Chapter Receives 1st Place Award for Women's Issues

At the April 11th DAR meeting, Nadine Bray displays the chapter's 1st Place award that was presented at this year's state meeting in Raleigh. 

North Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Certificate of Award was presented to Brunswck Town Chapter "Women's Issue's Report 1st Place. Please check through past article on the blog that Nadine has submitted about Women's Issues.

JROTC Winners Receive Awards


On April 11, 2012 The Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held their awards luncheon at The Boathouse Restaurant in Southport, NC.

The program was held in recognition of the student winners of the group’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. (JROTC) scholarship awards. The DAR criterion for selection is: Cadet must demonstrate qualities of dependability and good character. A cadet must adhere to military discipline, demonstrate leadership, and have a fundamental and patriotic understanding of the importance of service to both community and country. Nora Hickam, National Defense chairman presented certificates to Courtney Hammon, Maegan Benton and Lizbeth Buenrostro. Nora also presented a pin and a $100 savings bond at their school assembly programs in April.

Courtney Hammon is a junior at South Brunswick High School. She received the National Sojourners Award for JROTC. She has participated in drill and rifle teams. She has been taking taekwondo lessons for over a year. She does volunteer work for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center.  She plans to attend college at NC State University and then go in the Air Force.

Maegan Benton is a senior at West Brunswick High School. She participated in rifle, softball and soccer teams. She plans to attend Southeastern Community College and later transfer to a university to obtain a degree in physical therapy and/or nursing.

Lizbeth Buenrostro is a senior at North Brunswick High School. She participated in the cross country team and has been a member of the rifle team for three years. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. She is a Supply Officer (S-4) for JROTC. She plans to attend The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to pursue a degree in the medical field.
