Melissa Warren was the guest speaker at the April Brunswick Town DAR Meeting 2023

Melissa Warren, Director of Brunswick County Literacy Council

Vice-Regent of Brunswick Town Chapter NSDAR

At the April meeting, Brunswick County Literacy Council Executive Director Melissa Warren spoke about the organization which was organized in 1981 by Brunswick Community College. Warren informed the chapter that illiteracy is described as reading and writing at less than a third grade level. In the US, one in 6 adults are considered illiterate, she said. About 17% of Brunswick County’s population is considered illiterate, she said. The volunteer organization had 150 students last year and operates not just basic literacy programs but English as a second language program. They welcome new volunteers to join the effort.
Ms. Warren advised members that the primary goal of this organization is to improve the lives of Brunswick County families through literacy.  Literacy is critical to the growth of individuals and our community and assists in providing improved social and economic opportunities, and more information may be found on their website. www.bcliteracy.org

Our Brunswick Town chapter librarian reported that the chapter’s book club, the Liberty Daughters, had their last meeting on Saturday, April 1st.  The discussion was led by member Marti Morgan on the book “The Fourteenth Colony, The Forgotten Story of the Gulf South during America’s Revolution Era” by Mike Bunn.  The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 3rd , who will lead the discussion on the book “Flight of the Sparrow” by Amy Belding Brown.  The next Zoom meeting for the State DAR Evergreen Readers will be Thursday, May 25th, and their book is “The Jamestown Brides” by Jennifer Potte.  Our librarian urged members to acquaint themselves with the DAR Library website and search for the DAR Online Library Speaker series, adding that these are invaluable resources.  Please email our librarian if you are interested in joining the Evergreen Readers.  Her address is in our yearbook.

This is the gift basket that will be raffled off at the State DAR Conference in April.

Our Brunswick Town Chaplain conducted a Memorial Service for our Chapter member Natalie Englert, who passed away on February 11, 2023.  It was a moving and lovely tribute.  Her obituary is available online.
